Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:30 pm, an older African woman was standing on the side of a Santa Monica, California, highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her – generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s.

The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxi cab. She seemed to be in a big hurry! She wrote down his address, thanked him and drove away. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant combination console color TV and stereo record player were delivered to
his home.

A special note was attached. The note read: Dear Mr. James: “Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes but my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my husband’s bedside who was dying and arrived just before he passed away.
God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.”

……….what comes around goes around,…..sometimes in big and unexpected ways. Many of us seem to look for our rewards, payment for our deeds. And those that look for a reward from others often receive nothing. But those who do without expecting anything in return are usually rewarded more and then some. And if people use us, we must not open our mouths to anyone in any way that makes it appear as though we feel we should have received anything from our good deeds for that person saying they could have shown some form of gratitude…. behold, that person has their reward.

Mt 5:44 “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;…”

Matthew 6:1-4 “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”
