Early in the 20th century, two young medical school graduates and their father started a small sanitarium for mental patients on a farm outside Topeka, Kansas. This was a time with the “rest cure” was in vogue in psychiatry, and patients were sent to impersonal institutions to live out their days.
This father and his sons had a different idea. They were determined to create a loving, family atmosphere among their patients and staff. The nurses were given special training and were told “Let each person know how much you value them. Shower these people with love.”
The doctors were Karl and William Menninger, and the Minninger Clinic, with such “revolutionary” methods, became world famous and has helped countless numbers of people. Karl Menninger said, “Love cures people – both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it. This intangible thing love…enters into every theraputic relationship. It is an element which finds and heals, which comforts and restores, which works what we have to call for now, miracles.”
Jn 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

This is the first time I have come across, in the blogosphere, the Menningers. I have used K. A. Menninger often in posts, especially concerning the Orphaned infant deaths coming out of WW2. Good post. Thanks.

Interesting post about the Menninger Clinic origins. I agree that love is the most important emotion that we have and, while it may not be able to cure everything, it certainly makes going through it a whole lot easier.

Love never fails….the right kind of love,…where laying on our hands (Christians) to heal will always produce results. All sorts of evidence out there. Sadly, we don’t hear about it on the 6 o’ clock news, well….sometimes we do. 🙂 The prayer of faith will save the sick. Faith works by love…and it surely takes faith and love to heal anything, or any situation. Thanks for the comment. M-

I first learned about the Meninger Institute when I was in social work school; in fact, I attended a conference put on by them. They have an outstanding record of success in getting people with mental illness on their feet for real.
I am reminded of 1 Corinthians 13: All of the gifts and good works in the world are nothing without love.

That’s awesome. I know they have a great success rate. As for the Corinthians mention, not sure what version you were using…most versions people use these days are watered down, or incomplete. There are many versions that actually say the opposite of what the original King James says…but just so people will understand here, I will post a few examples from 1 Corinthians 13….
1 Cor 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1 Cor 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
1 Cor 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
1 Cor 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; Charity envieth not; Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
1 Cor 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1 Cor 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
There! Thanks for your comment. It’s posted. Charity is the action of love. Charity begins in the heart. Love is, as love in charity does. Both are love, and love in action. Love never takes, only gives….love never fails!

Great story and reminder for anyone facing illness. Too often doctors treat an illness, but ignore the patient. Perhaps some training in biblical theology could help doctors treat the whole patient and apply the most effective medicine (Love). Thanks for the post, really enjoyed it.
