The Best We Can Do

The Communist Regime in Eastern Europe ended so recently (1989), plenty of us can still remember it, and even know people who lived under communism and survived.

Even though the regime ended in 1989, some things about the hardships of day-to-day life in a communist country are noteworthy and can teach us a lot about survival.

Communications were very bad since there were no mobile phones. If you wanted to talk with someone, you had to go to the post office and use a pay phone as most people didn’t have one in their apartments. The T.V. schedule lasted a couple hours each night and was filled with communist propaganda. Finding out news was a matter or walking to work or around the apartment building talking with people.

Food was scarce, not because the countries didn’t produce it but because the heads of state were obsessed with staying debt free. Things like meat or exotic fruit were rare.

The transportation system was awful. Buses and trains would do the job but they were cold, uncomfortable and ran on a fixed schedule. Trains in would sometimes have 2-3 hours delays and were very unreliable. Very few people had cars. It could take up to 7 years to get one and they broke down often. In an EMP situation, mobility will be reduced unless you have an EMP-proof car, knowledge to fix it, and means to procure gas.

Electricity and running water would stop very often and there was no word as to when it would come back on. To stay warm if there was no heat in the autumn or winter, families would simply wear several layers of clothes. To stay cool during hot summer nights, people would sleep on the floor.

This information proves just how much we can learn from our ancestors.

Just because things seem to be moving in the right direction with all the medical and technological advancements, doesn’t mean they can’t take a turn for the worse.

Our European ancestors fled after some fighting; but for our sakes, they sought this new world- America. We can stand and fight or be refugees to another country. We have some choices- but if you stay and fight, be armed, and be ready; it’s just a matter of time before things go sour in the land of the fee.

The best we can do is focus on our survival, on taking care of our loved ones, and, if need be, to stand and fight for our liberties.

Always Safe, Always Prepared
